The Name

A word that
carries weight.

Thambi is a Tamil word meaning "younger brother." In South Asian culture, it carries more than its literal meaning it's a term of endearment, of protection, of belonging. It's the word used for the child who looks up to you. The one you'd do anything for.

We chose this name because it reflects who we're fighting for: the children, the younger siblings, the family members who are navigating the world of autism without enough support around them. The Thambi Project is, at its heart, about showing up for the people who need someone in their corner.

It's also a reminder of where we come from. This is a South Asian project, built by people who understand the culture from the inside and that specificity is our strength.

I didn't start The Thambi Project because I had all the answers. I started it because I watched someone I love navigate an autism diagnosis with almost no culturally relevant support. I saw firsthand how hard it was for South Asian families to find resources that actually fit their world.

These conversations don't always make it to the dinner table in South Asian communities. Families figure it out quietly, often without anyone who looks like them or truly understands where they're coming from.

Organizations like SAAAC are doing incredible work, and honestly, supporting and growing alongside them was a big part of why I started this. But I also needed a way to contribute that felt real and immediate, not just eventually. Cutting hair gave me that. Every cut was a direct contribution, a way to see something change before the bigger infrastructure was even in place.

The goal has always been simple: build something sustainable, keep the overhead honest, put every dollar back into the programs South Asian families need, and keep the conversation going.

Not recognition. Not charity for the sake of it. Just making sure the next family finds help faster than so many others across Canada.
